The best ClickUp alternative depends on what wore you out: if it was endless configuration, Basecamp is the cure; if you are a product team that wants clean sprints, Linear; if your projects are mostly documents, Notion; and if you want projects, docs, CRM and calendar in one flat-price tool for 2 to 15 people, Atrix AI. ClickUp remains relevant if your team enjoys building its own system.
We used ClickUp for over a year for our client projects before switching. What follows is our experience, with prices checked on each vendor's page in October 2026.
Why ClickUp feels too complex
ClickUp sells "one app to replace them all", and it keeps that promise in its own way: tasks, docs, whiteboards, chat, goals, time tracking, forms, AI. The price of that ambition is paid in configuration:
- The hierarchy. Spaces, folders, lists, tasks, subtasks, checklists. Each level has its own fields, views and permissions. A team of four can spend a weekend deciding where things live.
- The views. More than fifteen view types per list. That is powerful, and it is also fifteen decisions per list.
- Speed. With many tasks and custom fields the interface slows down, especially on mobile.
- Options everywhere. ClickApps, automations, integrations, templates: each is useful, and together they make a settings menu longer than most projects.
If your team enjoys that kind of building, stay. If you spend more time tuning the tool than delivering, read on.

Linear: for product teams that want clean sprints
Linear is ClickUp's opposite: few options, a fast interface, enforced conventions. Issues live in teams, group into projects and are planned in cycles. The free plan allows unlimited members with 250 issues and 2 teams; Basic costs $10 per user per month billed yearly and Business $16, per the pricing page in October 2026. A Linear Agent and an agent platform appear from the free plan, with AI credits for some features.
What it lacks: real docs (issue descriptions and project documents stay light), a CRM, a calendar, HR. Linear suits an engineering team that already has Notion or Google Docs for the rest. It does not suit an agency managing clients.
Basecamp: for those who want less
Basecamp was designed against complexity. Every project contains to-dos, a message board, chat, docs, a schedule, and that is it. No custom fields, no sprints, no views to configure. In October 2026, Freelancer costs $29 a month for up to 5 people and 3 projects, Pro $79 for up to 10 people and 8 projects, Pro Plus $99 for up to 15 and 12 projects, Pro Unlimited $199 a month billed yearly ($329 monthly) with no limit. The free plan offers 1 project for 3 users.
Basecamp is the right pick for an agency or service team where clients take part in projects and nobody wants training. It does not suit product teams that need a backlog, cycles and fine-grained tracking.
Notion: when the project is the document
Notion reverses ClickUp's logic: the page first, the view second. A task database shows as a board, list, calendar or timeline, and every task is a full page. Plus costs $10 per member per month and Business $20 in October 2026; the free plan is comfortable alone and limits pages and blocks from two members. Notion Agent arrives with Business, and custom agents use credits at $10 per 1,000.
What is missing: native sprints, backlog, burndown and CRM. Everything is built with databases and formulas, which brings back some of the complexity you are fleeing in ClickUp, but in a form writing teams already master.
Atrix AI: projects, docs, CRM and calendar at a flat price
Atrix AI is the tool we use today. It covers what we used in ClickUp without the configuration: projects with five views, backlog, timeline, cycles of one to four weeks with a goal, burndown and rollover, coloured labels and milestones; pages with live co-editing, version history and databases; team chat; calendar with public booking links synced to Google and Outlook; a five-stage CRM with deal values protected by permissions; hiring; HR; goals; time tracking. The AI agent turns a brief into requirements, architecture and planned tasks, and an 85-tool MCP server connects the workspace to Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor.
Limits, plainly: no free plan, the 7-day trial asks for a card; Builder costs $39 a month for 5 seats and Studio $149 for 15, so at 6 to 12 people the jump is expensive next to per-user pricing; no story points or velocity; no AI-generated whiteboards (whiteboards exist, drawing is manual); Android in testing. Founding teams that subscribe before 31 December 2026 keep unlimited seats. The structure is fixed, and that is precisely the point: there is less to decide.
The right pick per team type
| Your team | Recommended alternative | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Product or engineering team of 3 to 15 | Linear | Cycles, triage, speed; docs elsewhere |
| Agency or firm with clients in projects | Basecamp | Zero training, flat price, clients included |
| Content, research or consulting team | Notion | Docs first, tasks as a database |
| Studio, agency or startup that sells and delivers | Atrix AI | Projects, docs, CRM and booking together |
| Team that enjoys building its system | ClickUp | Nothing is as configurable |
What you would pay at 3, 5 and 10 people
Monthly with yearly billing, October 2026, in dollars as each page shows them.
| People | ClickUp Unlimited | Linear Basic | Basecamp | Notion Plus | Atrix AI |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | $21 | $30 | $29 (Freelancer) | $30 | $39 (Builder) |
| 5 | $35 | $50 | $29 (Freelancer) | $50 | $39 (Builder) |
| 10 | $70 | $100 | $79 (Pro) | $100 | $149 (Studio) |
ClickUp is rarely the most expensive: its cost is time, not the bill. At five, Basecamp and Atrix sit below the per-seat tools. At ten, Atrix Studio is the most expensive in the table, except for founding teams.
How to leave ClickUp in five steps
- Export your lists as CSV from workspace settings (Unlimited and above); on the free plan, export view by view.
- Cut the fields. Keep status, owner, due date, priority and one label. The rest was probably configuration, not information.
- Decide what happens to docs: ClickUp Docs export to Markdown or PDF; Atrix imports Markdown, Word and Excel, Notion imports Markdown.
- Recreate at most three automations. If you had thirty, you were not using thirty.
- Keep ClickUp read-only for a month before cancelling.
FAQ
What is the best free alternative to ClickUp?
Linear Free for a product team (unlimited members, 250 issues), Notion Free for one person, Basecamp Free for one project with three people. ClickUp's free plan remains one of the most generous. Atrix has no free plan.
Is ClickUp too complicated for a small team?
It can be. The spaces-folders-lists hierarchy and custom fields demand decisions few teams of three want to make. If you enjoy building your system, that is a strength; if not, Basecamp or Atrix will save you weeks.
Does ClickUp have euro pricing?
The pricing page we checked in October 2026 shows dollars only. Check the amount and VAT shown for your country at checkout.
Linear or ClickUp for a development team?
Linear if you want cycles, triage and a fast interface with enforced conventions. ClickUp if you want the same tool to also handle marketing, docs and support.
Does Atrix replace ClickUp feature for feature?
No. Atrix covers projects, docs, chat, calendar, CRM, hiring, HR, goals and time, with a fixed structure. It does not have ClickUp's fifteen view types, advanced forms or AI-generated whiteboards.
