Basecamp and ClickUp solve the same problem in opposite ways. Basecamp is a calm, opinionated project tool sold at a flat monthly price per tier. ClickUp is a highly configurable work platform priced per user. Choose Basecamp if you want simple projects, client access and a predictable bill. Choose ClickUp if you need custom fields, dashboards, automations and many views.

This post compares them on price, features and fit, with figures checked on each vendor's own pricing page in October 2026. We make a third product, Atrix AI, and it appears once, at the end. Everything before that is about Basecamp and ClickUp.

The short answer

  • Pick Basecamp if your team is under 15 people, your work is a handful of projects at a time, you share projects with clients, and you would rather not configure your tool.
  • Pick ClickUp if you want to model your own workflow: statuses, custom fields, Gantt charts, dashboards and automation rules, or if you are one or two people who want a capable free plan.
  • Neither is a clear winner on price. Basecamp is cheaper for most teams of 5 to 15. ClickUp Core is cheaper for very small teams and for teams that land just past a Basecamp tier.

Pricing as of October 2026

The two vendors price in different units, so the first thing to do is put them in the same one: dollars per month for the whole team.

Basecamp charges per tier, with no per-user fee inside a tier:

PlanPriceUsersActive projectsStorage
Free$0Up to 311 GB
Freelancer$29 a monthUp to 5Up to 310 GB
Pro$79 a monthUp to 10Up to 825 GB
Pro Plus$99 a monthUp to 15Up to 12100 GB
Pro Unlimited$199 a month billed yearly, $329 billed monthlyUnlimitedUnlimited1 TB

Two details matter. Every person you add counts toward the user limit, including clients, contractors and guests, until Pro Unlimited. And the tiers below Pro Unlimited cap active projects, though archived projects do not count. Paid plans come with a 30-day trial that needs no card.

ClickUp charges per user. Its current lineup, billed yearly:

PlanPrice per user per monthNotes
Free Forever$060 MB of storage, 5 Spaces
Core$9Shown against a regular price of $12; unlimited storage
Business$17Shown against a regular price of $25
EnterpriseCustomContact sales

Each plan includes a pool of AI credits per user each month (1,000 on Core, 1,500 on Business), and more can be bought as AI Super Credits at $10 per 10,000. ClickUp's pricing page also still shows its older lineup (Unlimited at $7 and Business at $12 per user billed yearly), so check which one you are offered at checkout.

What a team actually pays

Monthly cost for the whole team. ClickUp is at its yearly rate. Basecamp is on the smallest plan that fits the people, ignoring the project limit.

Team sizeBasecampClickUp CoreClickUp Business
3$0 (Free, 1 project) or $29$27$51
5$29 (Freelancer)$45$85
10$79 (Pro)$90$170
15$99 (Pro Plus)$135$255
25$199 yearly or $329 monthly (Pro Unlimited)$225$425

What the table shows:

  • From 5 to 15 people, Basecamp is cheaper than ClickUp Core, and much cheaper than ClickUp Business.
  • Just past a tier, the gap closes. Sixteen people on Basecamp means Pro Unlimited at $199, while sixteen on ClickUp Core is $144.
  • At 25 people billed monthly, ClickUp Core is cheaper than Basecamp's $329.
  • Clients change the sum. If you invite five client contacts into Basecamp, they take five of your user slots. Budget for the people who sign in, not just your staff.

Where Basecamp is stronger

Basecamp is built around a small set of tools that every project gets: a Message Board for announcements, To-dos, a Card Table, a Campfire chat, a Calendar, Docs & Files and Automatic Check-ins that ask the team a recurring question. Nobody has to design a workspace before work starts.

Hill Charts are a genuinely different idea: instead of a percentage, each piece of work sits on a hill, uphill while the approach is still being worked out and downhill once it is just execution. Client mode lets you share a project with a client and choose which parts they see. And the flat price means adding the eighth person to a Pro account costs nothing.

Where ClickUp is stronger

ClickUp is a toolkit. You get statuses, custom fields, Gantt charts, automations, dashboards, forms, whiteboards, docs and chat, and you can shape them to fit how your team already works. Basecamp's features page lists none of custom fields, automations, Gantt charts or dashboards, so if you depend on them, Basecamp is the wrong tool.

ClickUp also has the better entry point for very small teams. Its Free Forever plan has unlimited members and many projects, while Basecamp's free plan stops at one project and three people. And ClickUp's MCP server (at mcp.clickup.com) works on every plan, with daily call limits that rise with the plan: 100 calls a day on Free, 300 on Core and 1,000 on Business.

The cost of that flexibility is setup time: someone has to decide how Spaces, Folders and Lists are arranged before the team can rely on them, and the limits per plan (Lists per Space, automation actions, whiteboards) are worth reading before you commit.

Who each one suits

Basecamp suits:

  • Agencies and studios working on a few client projects at a time.
  • Teams that want fewer notifications and longer-form updates instead of a busy task feed.
  • Owners who want to know next year's bill today.

ClickUp suits:

  • Operations-heavy teams that need reporting across many projects.
  • Teams with a defined process they want the tool to enforce, through statuses and automations.
  • Solo founders and pairs who will live on the free plan for a while.
  • Larger teams on monthly billing, where per-user pricing beats Basecamp Pro Unlimited.

Or both in one: Atrix AI

If you like Basecamp's calm, all-in-one-place approach but want ClickUp's structured work views, Atrix AI sits between them. Every plan includes work and projects with five views, boards and a backlog, team chat with channels and DMs, pages and docs with databases, a calendar with public booking links, a CRM with a deal pipeline, and hiring. It also includes an AI agent and an MCP server, so Claude or ChatGPT can read and update the workspace.

The pricing is bundled, like Basecamp's: Builder is $39 a month for 5 seats with 100 AI runs, and Studio is $149 a month for 15 seats with 500 runs, 20% less billed yearly. Founding teams that subscribe before 31 December 2026 keep unlimited seats.

Be clear about the trade-offs. Atrix has no free plan: you start a 7-day trial and a card is required. It has fewer configuration options than ClickUp. And a team of 6 to 12 people pays for Studio's 15 seats. The Basecamp comparison and the ClickUp comparison go through each difference line by line.

FAQ

Is Basecamp cheaper than ClickUp?

For most teams of 5 to 15 people, yes. Basecamp Freelancer covers 5 users for $29 a month and Pro Plus covers 15 for $99, against $45 and $135 on ClickUp Core billed yearly. For one to three people, or just past a Basecamp tier, ClickUp is usually cheaper.

Does Basecamp charge for clients?

Not per person, but every client, contractor and guest you add counts toward the plan's user limit, until Pro Unlimited, which has no limit.

Does ClickUp have a flat-price plan?

No. Every paid ClickUp plan is priced per user per month, and Enterprise is priced by quote.

Which is easier to learn?

Basecamp. Every project has the same tools in the same places. ClickUp can be just as simple, but only after someone decides how the workspace should be structured.

Can I connect AI assistants to either one?

Yes. ClickUp runs an MCP server on every plan, with daily call limits by plan. Basecamp lets you connect ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and Grok, and offers an official CLI and SDKs for agents and developers.
