AI hiring software for a small company does four distinct jobs, and most tools do only one or two well: drafting job descriptions, sourcing candidates, screening or ranking applications, and summarising interviews. As of October 2026, Workable sells all four through AI agents on credits from $299 a month, Ashby includes AI application review and interview summaries in a $400-a-month plan for companies under 100 people, Homerun (from €109) lists no AI features, and Atrix drafts job descriptions with its agent but does no screening or scoring.

We hire a few people a year for a small company and run our roles through the tool we build. This post separates what the AI does from what the marketing says, because the gap is wide, and the Resume Genius 2026 report puts a number on how far most companies have actually gone.

How much AI is actually used in hiring

The Resume Genius 2026 Hiring Insights Report, a survey of 1,000 US hiring managers published in January 2026, is the most recent figure we trust. It found that 71% of hiring managers say their company uses an applicant tracking system, and that 19% use AI to screen out applications before any human sees them. A further 32% say AI recommends or ranks candidates but humans make every final decision, and only 6% let AI move candidates forward or reject them with limited human review.

So the common case in 2026 is an ATS with AI that ranks or suggests, and a person who decides. Fully automated screening is a minority, and for a small company hiring four people a year it is also unnecessary: thirty applications a role is an afternoon of reading. The AI features worth paying for at that size are the ones that save writing time and keep interviews consistent, not the ones that replace reading.

The four jobs AI hiring tools do

JobWhat good looks likeWho does it as of October 2026
Drafting the roleA job description from a short brief, in your voice, with requirements you can editWorkable (Job Brief Agent on every plan), Ashby (AI Content Assistant), Atrix (agent drafts from a brief)
SourcingFinding passive candidates that match, with outreach draftsWorkable (Sourcing Agent, 2 credits a candidate), Ashby (AI Candidate Search, AI Outreach Personalization)
Screening and rankingReading applications against criteria and surfacing the best, with reasons a human can checkWorkable (Screening Agent, 1 credit an evaluation), Ashby (AI Assisted Application Review)
Interview supportScheduling, notes, summaries and feedback promptsAshby (AI Auto-Scheduler, AI Notetaker as a paid add-on, AI-generated Interview Summaries), Workable (Engagement Agent)

Homerun's pricing page lists no AI features, and Atrix does only the first row. Those are not criticisms; they are the honest scope.

Workable and Ashby figures are from their pricing pages; Ashby's page did not make clear which AI features are on which plan, so treat the Foundations list as what the page names rather than a per-plan guarantee. Homerun's page shows two price sets under a monthly/annual toggle and we read the lower pair as annual.

Workable: the most AI, paid for in credits

Workable's model is clear once you see the credit table. Every ATS plan includes the Job Brief Agent and 3,000 AI credits a month. Evaluating a candidate with the Screening Agent costs 1 credit, sourcing a passive candidate 2, and each chat interaction 10. 3,000 credits covers a lot of screening for a small company; it does not cover a lot of chat. Credit packs are 5,000 for $600, 10,000 for $1,000 and 50,000 for $4,750, expiring a year after purchase. The 15-day trial does not include the Workable Agent.

At $299 a month for up to 20 employees, Workable is the right buy for a small company that hires every month and wants sourcing. For a company that opens three roles a year, the AI is doing a job you did not need done.

Ashby: the most complete AI feature list, for companies that will grow

Ashby's All-In-One Foundations plan is $400 a month (10% off with an annual commitment) for companies up to 100 employees, and its feature list names more AI than any other tool here: candidate search, outreach personalisation, assisted application review, interview summaries, an auto-scheduler, a content assistant, report interpretation, an MCP server for AI workflows, and custom AI agents. Foundations includes 1,500 credits a month; the AI Notetaker is a paid add-on.

Ashby is built for a startup that will be 50 people, with analytics and scheduling that a 5-person team will not use yet. If you are 8 people hiring 3 roles a year, $4,800 a year buys capability you will grow into or never use.

Homerun: a careers page and a pipeline, no AI

Homerun's pricing page, as of October 2026, mentions no AI features at all. What it sells is a block-based careers page builder, a branded application form per role, a simple pipeline and a custom domain, at €109 a month billed annually for 3 job slots or €195 for 5. For a company that reads every application itself, that is not a gap. It is in this post because a search for AI hiring software for a small company often ends with the realisation that AI is not the requirement; a pipeline is.

Atrix: job description drafting, no screening, inside the workspace

Atrix is the tool we build, so this section is limits first. Atrix includes hiring on every plan: roles, a public careers page, an applicant pipeline with stages and notes, and hiring a candidate creates their teammate record with the employment record in the people module. The AI agent drafts a job description from a short brief (role, level, what the person will own), using an AI run from the plan's allowance; there is also a job description template to start from without a run.

What the AI does not do in Atrix hiring, stated plainly: no resume or CV screening, no candidate scoring or ranking, no sourcing, no interview summaries, no automated scheduling beyond the calendar's booking links. If AI screening is the reason you are searching, Atrix is not the answer. If the reason is that hiring is one of ten things a small team runs and you want it next to the work, the docs and the chat for $39 a month for 5 seats, with no separate ATS login for the engineers who interview, that is what it is for. The hiring feature page has the full list.

What a small company should actually buy

  1. Count roles per year. Under five, AI screening saves minutes. Buy a pipeline (Homerun, or a workspace with hiring) and draft job descriptions with whatever assistant you already pay for.
  2. If you hire monthly, buy the agents. Workable's credit model is the cheapest way to get sourcing and screening at small size; Ashby if you expect to triple headcount.
  3. Keep a human on every rejection. The 2026 survey's 19% who screen out with AI before any human review are mostly large companies with thousands of applications. At thirty a role, read them.
  4. Write scorecards before you turn on ranking. AI ranking is only as good as the criteria. Three to five per stage, scored 1 to 4.
  5. Check data handling. Candidate data is personal data. Ask where the vendor's AI sends it and whether it trains on it. Workable and Ashby publish this; ask before you upload.

FAQ

What is the best AI hiring software for a small business?

For a small business hiring monthly, Workable (from $299 a month, as of October 2026) offers the most AI for the money through credits. For a startup that will grow past 30 people, Ashby ($400 a month under 100 employees). For a company hiring a few roles a year, AI screening is unnecessary; a pipeline with a careers page is the purchase, and Homerun or a workspace with hiring such as Atrix covers it.

Does AI resume screening work for small companies?

It works, but it rarely pays at small volume. The Resume Genius 2026 report found 19% of hiring managers use AI to screen out applications before human review; most of the benefit is at hundreds of applications a role. At thirty, a person reads them faster than they can audit a ranking.

Is there free AI hiring software?

Not among the dedicated tools here: Workable and Homerun offer 15-day trials and Ashby and Atrix have no free plan. For drafting job descriptions, any free assistant does the job; for screening, there is no free tier worth relying on as of October 2026.

What is an AI ATS?

An applicant tracking system with AI features: usually job description drafting, candidate ranking or screening, and interview summaries. The applicant tracking glossary entry covers what an ATS does with or without the AI.

Does Atrix screen candidates with AI?

No. Atrix's agent drafts job descriptions, and its hiring module tracks roles, applicants and stages with notes from the people who interview. Screening, scoring and sourcing are not features, and we do not plan to claim otherwise.

Next step

If hiring is one part of running a small company rather than the whole job, the hiring feature page shows how roles, the careers page and the pipeline sit next to the rest of the workspace. If you are deciding whether to leave a spreadsheet at all, read spreadsheet vs ATS: when to switch first.
