For a small team, ClickUp is cheaper and broader, monday.com is simpler and prettier. As of October 2026 ClickUp Core is $9 per user per month on yearly billing with no seat minimum and AI credits included; monday.com Standard is $12 per seat, sold in buckets of 3, 5, 10 and 15, with AI credits at $10 per 1,000. A team of 6 pays $54 on ClickUp and $120 on monday. Choose monday if you will trade money for calm; choose ClickUp if you want everything in one app and can live with configuring it.

We have set both up for client teams, mostly agencies, and used ClickUp ourselves for a quarter. This is a comparison of the two on the things that matter to a team of 3 to 15: what you actually pay, how AI is charged, how much configuration each demands, and which one an agency should pick.

Price at 3, 6 and 12 people

ClickUp's pricing page shows Core at $9 per user per month on yearly billing (against a regular $12), Business at $17 (regular $25) and Max at $100, plus a Free Forever plan with unlimited tasks, 60 MB of storage and 100 automation actions a month. There is no minimum seat count.

monday.com's page shows Work Management at $9 (Basic), $12 (Standard) and $19 (Pro) per seat per month on yearly billing, monthly billing 18% higher, and a Free plan for up to 2 seats and 3 boards. The FAQ says plans start from 3 users, and monday's help centre describes bucket pricing: 3 seats, then steps of 5. At checkout you cannot pick fewer seats than you have active users.

PeopleClickUp Core ($9, exact users)monday Standard ($12, buckets)Difference
3$27$36 (3 seats)$9
4$36$60 (5 seats)$24
6$54$120 (10 seats)$66
10$90$120 (10 seats)$30
12$108$180 (15 seats)$72

monday's bucket pricing is the single biggest cost difference for small teams. At exactly 5, 10 or 15 people the gap narrows to the headline difference of $3 per seat; at 6 or 12 it more than doubles. The glossary entry at /glossary/flat-vs-per-seat-pricing covers the general pattern.

AI: included credits versus paid credits

ClickUp includes AI credits in every paid plan, pooled across the workspace: 1,000 per user per month on Core, 1,500 on Business, 3,000 on Enterprise and 10,000 on Max as of October 2026, with AI Super Credits at $10 per 10,000 as an add-on. The Free plan gets 500 credits per workspace. ClickUp Brain covers writing, summaries, search across tasks and docs, and agents.

monday.com sells AI credits at $10 per 1,000. The pricing page shows Basic, Standard and Pro with 1,000, 2,000 and 3,000 credits and a "special monthly discount" that offsets the cost, which the page does not fully explain; the FAQ estimates a 3-person team uses 800 to 1,200 credits a month. Budget for the credits to be a real line once the promotion ends. monday AI covers formulas, summaries, categorisation and AI blocks in automations.

If AI is central to how you plan to work, ClickUp's included allowance is more generous and more predictable. If you will use AI occasionally, the difference is small.

Complexity: breadth versus guardrails

ClickUp's hierarchy of spaces, folders, lists, tasks, subtasks and nested subtasks, plus custom fields, ClickApps, 15 or so views and a settings tree to match, is why "ClickUp too complicated" is a common search. The product can model anything, and a 5-person team pays for that in a week of setup and an ongoing argument about which view is the real one.

monday.com is boards with columns. You can build complex things with automations, dashboards and sub-items, but the default experience is a coloured table that a non-technical team understands in an hour. The guardrails are the product: fewer ways to do things, so fewer ways to do them wrong.

Our rule from setting both up: if nobody on the team wants to own the tool's configuration, pick monday. If someone does and will say no to new fields, ClickUp will reward them.

Features where each one wins

ClickUp wins on: docs (real documents, not monday's lighter docs), whiteboards, native time tracking on all paid plans, sprints via ClickApp, goals, a free plan with unlimited tasks, and the depth of custom fields and views.

monday.com wins on: onboarding speed, visual clarity, automation recipes that non-technical people can build, dashboards across many boards, and a product suite (monday CRM, monday dev, monday service) from one vendor. Its Standard plan includes 250 automation and integration actions a month and guest access; Pro adds time tracking and private boards.

Neither wins on performance in large workspaces; both have review themes about speed once a workspace holds thousands of items.

ClickUp vs monday.com for an agency

Agencies are the most common buyers of both. The decision usually comes down to three questions.

  1. Do clients log in? monday's guest access on Standard and its cleaner boards make client-facing views easier. ClickUp guests are more limited on lower plans.
  2. How many people, exactly? An agency of 6 pays monday for 10 seats. ClickUp charges for 6. Over a year on Standard versus Core that is $792 of difference.
  3. Who owns the setup? Agencies with an operations lead do well on ClickUp. Agencies where account managers run their own boards do better on monday.

The flat-price third option

If seat maths is the deciding factor, there is a third shape worth knowing: flat packs rather than per-seat or buckets. Atrix AI (our product, so weigh accordingly) charges $39 a month for 5 seats and $149 for 15, with work tracking, docs, chat, CRM, hiring and an AI planning agent included and no per-user line at all; its limits are no free plan, nothing above 15 seats outside the founding-team offer, and a far smaller integration catalogue than either ClickUp or monday. For most teams choosing between these two, though, the comparison is really ClickUp versus monday, and the rest of this post stands on its own.

How to decide in an afternoon

  1. Count your active users and price both tools at that number using the table above; note the bucket rounding on monday.
  2. Build the same three boards in both free trials with real work, not sample data.
  3. Ask the least technical person on the team to add a task, assign it and set a due date without help, and time it.
  4. Check whether the automations you rely on (status change triggers, due-date reminders, client notifications) exist on the plan you priced.
  5. Pick the one the team used on day three without being reminded.

FAQ

Is ClickUp cheaper than monday.com?

Yes, for most small teams. ClickUp Core is $9 per user per month with no minimum; monday Standard is $12 per seat sold in buckets of 3, 5, 10 and 15, so a team of 6 pays for 10 seats. As of October 2026.

Does monday.com have a 3-seat minimum?

Yes. monday's FAQ says plans start from 3 users, and its help centre describes seat buckets that then step up in increments of 5.

Which is easier to use, ClickUp or monday.com?

monday.com. Its board-and-column model is understood in an hour; ClickUp's hierarchy and custom fields take longer to set up and to keep tidy.

Does ClickUp or monday.com include AI?

Both, differently. ClickUp includes pooled AI credits in every paid plan (1,000 per user per month on Core). monday sells credits at $10 per 1,000 with an included allowance that currently carries a promotional discount.

Which is better for an agency, ClickUp or monday.com?

monday if clients log in and account managers run their own boards; ClickUp if an operations lead owns the setup and the agency wants docs, time tracking and sprints in the same tool.
