What is a deal pipeline?

A deal pipeline is the sequence of stages a potential sale moves through, from first contact to won or lost, shown as a board or list in a CRM. Each deal sits in one stage with a value and an owner, so a team can see what is likely to close, where deals stall, and what revenue is coming.

Also called: Sales pipeline, CRM pipeline

Deal pipeline, explained

A pipeline turns selling from a set of conversations in people's heads into something a team can see and manage. Every opportunity becomes a deal record with a company, a contact, a value, an owner and a stage. The stages describe the path a sale takes in your business.

Stage names vary, but most pipelines have the same arc: a new lead, a qualified opportunity where you have confirmed need and budget, a proposal or negotiation, and then a closed outcome, won or lost. Keeping the number of stages small makes the board readable and the definitions clear; each stage should mean something specific, such as "proposal sent", that two salespeople would agree on.

Pipelines answer practical questions. What is the total value in each stage? Which deals have not moved in three weeks? What fraction of qualified deals do we win? Weighted forecasts multiply each deal's value by a probability for its stage to estimate likely revenue.

The most valuable and most neglected field is the reason a deal was lost. Won explains itself; lost is where a pipeline teaches you something, about price, timing, competitors or fit, and that reason is almost never written down later if it is not captured at the moment the deal closes.

For example, an agency's pipeline shows twelve deals: five new, four qualified, two with proposals out and one won this month. A proposal to a clinic group has sat for three weeks, so the owner follows up. A second proposal is lost to a cheaper competitor, and the reason is recorded.

How it works in Atrix

The Atrix CRM has companies, contacts and deals in a five-stage pipeline: New, Qualified, Proposed, Won and Lost. Moving a deal to Lost asks for the reason. Deal values are shown only to people with permission to see them, and an API token with the deal-value scope still sees no amounts unless its owner may.
